Malta International Airport Plc Extends CEO Alan Borg's Contract until 2027
Date of Announcement 15 December 2022 Reference 377/2022 In terms of Chapter 5 of the Capital Market Rules
Malta International Airport Plc's Board of Directors has approved the extension of the contract of the current Chief Executive Officer Mr Alan Borg for another term expiring in February 2027.
"I would like to thank Mr Borg for accepting to stay on at the helm of the airport team. Continuity at the highest levels of decision-making is crucial as the company continues to evolve through large-scale investments and aim for sustainable growth. I am confident that Mr Borg's leadership and understanding of the industry will support the company in realising its ambitious investment programme, particularly in completing the Apron X and SkyParks 2 projects together with the first phase of the terminal expansion," said Malta International Airport Chairman Nikolaus Gretzmacher.
Service excellence, environmental sustainability and investment have been the hallmarks of Mr Borg's seven-year tenure. Under Mr Borg's leadership, Malta International Airport has won several awards in recognition of the excellent service delivered to guests, undergone a number of upgrades – including a terminal reconfiguration - which have contributed to a more seamless guest experience, and more recently inaugurated a new multi-storey car park. As Malta International Airport continues to recover and work towards achieving growth, service excellence, sustainability and investment will continue to underpin the company's strategy.
Signed: Louis de Gabriele Company Secretary
2022 marks 30 years since the new Malta International Airport terminal building was inaugurated, ushering in an exciting era for tourism and the local aviation industry. Between 2002 – the year when the airport was privatised – and 2021, more than 75 million passengers travelled through the terminal building.
The building, which was originally designed with the aim of eventually handling 2.5 million passengers annually, saw a record 7.3 million passengers in 2019 alone, before COVID-19 slashed this number in 2020.
The terminal's continuous evolution, particularly through an investment of more than €30 million in two extensions together with a more recent €12 million reconfiguration, and the Company's vision of service excellence, led to Malta International Airport being awarded the 'Best Airport in Europe' accolade by Airports Council International in 2018, 2019 and 2020.
