Serco signs £120m contract expansion on HMP Thameside

Serco Group plc (Serco), the international service company, today announces that it has expanded its contract with the UK's Ministry of Justice (MoJ) to build and operate an extension to HMP Thameside.  The expansion has a total value to Serco of £120m over 22 years, including £36m for the 18-month construction phase which has now commenced.

Serco signed the original £415m, 26 ½ year operating contract in July 2010 and has managed HMP Thameside since it opened in March 2012.  Today it can accommodate up to 900 Category B prisoners.  The expansion will provide an additional 332 prisoner places with Serco continuing its innovative and successful partnership with third-sector partners Catch 22 and Turning Point to deliver offender management services.

James Thorburn, Serco's Managing Director Home Affairs, said: "We are delighted to have been awarded this contract expansion to extend the size of the prison at Thamesidewhich will support the MoJ in its programme to modernise the UK prison estate.  Both Her Majesty's Chief Inspector of Prisons and more recently the Independent Monitoring Board have recognised the progress that has been made since the prison first opened but we also recognise that much remains to be achieved."
