Veidekke ASA: To build the world's best rainy-day school

Veidekke ASA: To build the world's best rainy-day school

Veidekke has been commissioned to build Torslandaskolan F-6 for the Gothenburg

City authority. The design and build contract has a value of approx. SEK 217

million. The new school is scheduled for completion in spring 2024.

The City of Gothenburg is currently celebrating its 400th anniversary, and the

construction of Torslandaskolan F-6 is part of the anniversary initiative "Rain

Gothenburg". Under the slogan "The best city in the world when it's raining",

Gothenburg focuses on sustainability and addressing climate change.

Torslandaskolan aims to make water a resource for play as well as for lessons.

"Gothenburg sees rain about every third day - which means that not only should

you learn to like it, but also to make the best of it. The contractor Veidekke

is doing just that, by making available their best resources to turn our vision

into reality. Torslandaskolan is designed for both students and teachers to have

fun in the rain, while delaying the water's entry into the stormwater system, to

avoid congesting our drainage pipes in the event of heavy rainfall, says Karl

Johan Canestedt, senior project manager in the City of Gothenburg.

Veidekke's assignment includes new production of approx. 8,900 sqm gross area

over three floors. The school is also a pilot project in the city's commitment

to making its buildings and their environments more accessible, inclusive and

attractive to any user, regardless of gender or gender identity, age, functional

abilities etc. This means that the nearly 600 students, including those with

special needs, will have a school that places great emphasis on sustainability

and equality.

"We appreciate having the City of Gothenburg's confidence and look forward to

constructing an excellent learning environment for our children, says Anders

Holmqvist, project manager at Veidekke Bygg Väst.

The contract is included in the order book for the current quarter.
