PRESS RELEASE

Social Science Academic Press and Brill announce groundbreaking Social Science co-publication series

August 30, 2007. Brill and SSAP are pleased to announce the establishment of the joint publication series The Chinese Academy of Social Sciences Yearbooks. The Chinese version of each of the resulting volumes will appear with SSAP and the English translation with Brill. These yearbooks contain top Chinese social science research on China by leading researchers from the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, prestigious Chinese universities, and innovative non-governmental organizations. These yearbooks serve as excellent primary sources for international scholars interested in following developments in social science research in China.

An agreement to formally confirm the very important partnership between the two presses is to be signed by Dr. Xie Shouguang, president of SSAP [www.ssap.com.cn] and Mr. Herman Pabbruwe, chief executive of Brill [www.brill.nl; www.brillchina.cn], on Thursday, August 30th at the Beijing International Book Fair 2007.

The first translated co-publication, The China Environment Yearbook (2005), was published in May 2007 and will be presented to the public at the Beijing Book Fair. Following publications are The China Society Yearbook (2006), The China Economy Yearbook (2006), and The China Legal Development Yearbook (2006).

"The primary intention for this joined initiative is to offer current research of top Chinese Social Scientists the opportunity to seek international dissemination, and thus exposure and readership. These publications are expected to also provide an answer to the information needs in the Western Hemisphere about current social developments in China." [Matthias Wahls, Manager Business Development, Brill].

"The continuous rapid growth of the Chinese economy over the last several decades has initiated enormous and profound change in Chinese society. The rapid pace and widespread impact of these changes in China has become an incredibly popular topic of interest to people throughout the world. We at Social Sciences Academic Press are taking an enthusiastic and rigorous approach in cooperating with Brill to bring the English versions of The Chinese Academy of Social Sciences Yearbooks to readers in English speaking countries in order to satisfy these readers' increasing desire to better understand contemporary China." [Xie Shouguang, President of Social Sciences Academic Press].

"The Chinese Academy of Social Sciences Yearbooks series collects some of the most cutting edge social science research and analysis coming out of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences and related academic and non-governmental organizations. Working with SSAP to develop this series has yielded valuable academic resources thus far, and I look forward to cooperating with my colleagues in Beijing to develop promising new co-publications in the future." [Matt Kawecki, Acquisitions Editor Asian Studies, Brill].

About Social Sciences Academic Press (SSAP)

SSAP was established in 1985 as the humanities and social sciences academic publishing organization of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS). Making use of the two major resources of CASS, rich offerings of academic publications and expert scholars, SSAP has always upheld the publishing motto "Create CASS classics and distribute publications globally." Over the years SSAP has produced authoritative, pioneering, and original publications while gaining an excellent reputation through careful organization and expansion of its academic publishing program to meet the needs of growing markets.

After 20 years of operations, SSAP has attained a high level of achievement in the academic publishing world, having established itself as an outstanding platform from which humanities and social science can disseminate the results of their research. SSAP has already developed into an internationally influential humanities and social science academic publishing organization, and continues to expand its influence through cooperation with scholars and publishing houses outside of China.

In this new phase of development, SSAP is setting new, innovative goals. In order to stay in step with new developments across the globe, SSAP endeavors to build and maintain a humanities and social sciences academic publishing program, including books, journals, digital, and online publications aimed at high-level readers and users, that is both international in scope and competitively unique.
