BOLOGNA AIRPORT: 70 THOUSAND PASSENGERS IN MARCH

The severe restrictions due to the pandemic outbreak continue to impact on passenger traffic, which reported a decrease of 28.4% on March 2020 and of 90.2% on March 2019

With the persistence of severe travel restrictions due to the Covid-19 outbreak, another month with a decrease is confirmed for Bologna Airport: in March, monthly passengers were just over 70,000 (71,505), a decrease of 28.4% on March 2020, a month already strongly marked by the health emergency. If compared to March 2019, in fact, the decrease in passengers is much more evident: -90.2%.

In detail, passengers on domestic flights were 30,755 (+24.3% on March 2020, but - 80.9% on March 2019), while those on international flights were 40,750 (-45.8% on March 2020, -92.8% on March 2019). Aircraft movements were 1,097 (-45.2% on March 2020, - 81.0% on March 2019), while air freight registered 3,342 tons, with an increase of 33.1% on March 2020 and with a minimum decrease (-6.7%) on March 2019.

The restrictions on flights introduced with the pandemic outbreak also affected the ranking of the most popular destinations in March, where the first three places are Catania, Tirana and Casablanca. Followed in the "top ten": Palermo, Amsterdam, Madrid, Istanbul, Paris Charles de Gaulle, Rome Fiumicino and Lamezia.

In the first quarter of the year, the total number of passengers was 209,802 (-85.0% on the same period of 2020), with 3,100 movements (-75.7%) and 9,077 tons of air freight (+10.9%).

In conclusion, the first months of 2021 still show no signs of improvement over 2020, except for the cargo sector. With the start of the summer flight schedule, from the last weekend of March, and especially with the intensification of the vaccination campaign, the hope is that summer will represent the beginning of a turnaround, for a progressive recovery of traffic.
