While travel restrictions imposed by the pandemic outbreak are still in force, one more negative month was recorded at Bologna Airport, especially as regards international traffic. In April monthly passengers were slightly over 93 thousand (93,072), a decrease of 88.3% on April 2019. The comparison with April 2020, harshly impacted by the lockdown, is not significant as flights were reduced to only one daily frequency to Rome Fiumicino.
In detail, in April 2021 domestic passengers were 51,448 (-68% on April 2019), while international passengers were 41,624 (-93.5% on April 2019). FIight movements were 1,327 (-78.6% on April 2019), and air freight was 3,081 tons, recording a very low decrease (-1.4%) on April 2019.
The flight restrictions caused by the pandemic outbreak continue to affect also the mostpopular-destination ranking, where mainly Italian airports rank first. This is April's "top-ten destinations: Catania, Palermo, Tirana, Rome Fiumicino, Bari, Amsterdam, Lametia, Madrid, Paris Charles de Gaulle and Istanbul.
During the first four months of the year, total passengers were 302,874 (-89.0% on the same period in 2019), with 4,427 movements (-80.2%) and 12,158 tons of transported freight (-7.9%).
No recovery sign is therefore being recorded in the first months of 2021, especially as regards international flights which historically account for the largest market share of Bologna Airport. With the start of Summer flight schedules and the strengthening of vaccine campaign, the hope is this Summer will see a turnaround leading to progressive traffic recovery.
