The slow and steady passenger traffic growth has been going on after the sudden stop due to the pandemic outbreak. Although overall data are still far from pre-Covid records, in November Bologna Airport regained 75% of the passenger traffic registered in November 2019, a significant result in an uncertain scenario for the whole aviation industry.
In detail, in November 2021 533,148 passengers were recorded, a decrease of 25.2% on November 2019, the last year before pandemic, but an increase of 552.5% on November 2020, when strong travel limitations caused by the pandemic "second wave" had reduced passengers to 80 thousands only.
In November domestic traffic strongly increased, +12.1% compared with November 2019 (167,172 passengers) and +315,2% on the same month last year. International traffic instead is still on the decrease versus 2019 with 365,976 passengers (-35.1% compared with November 2019, but +783.0% on November 2020).
Flight movements were 4,505 (-18.9% versus November 2019, +164.1% on the same month in 2020), while air freight registered 3,782 tons, up 15.4% on November 2019 but down -19.2% on November 2020.
A two-speed trend is therefore being confirmed, with domestic passengers having already exceeded pre-Covid rates and international traffic still held back by pandemic.
This trend is also confirmed by November's favorite-destination ranking where 3 Italian airports rank in the first 3 positions: Catania, Palermo and Bari followed by Madrid, Barcelona, Paris Charles de Gaulle, Brindisi, Valencia, Tirana and Brussels Charleroi.
From January to November 2021, Bologna Airport's total passengers were 3,627,680, a decrease of 58.3% on the same period in 2019, with 33,548 flight movements (-50.1%) and 35,325 tons of transported goods (+1.0%). If compared with 2020, the figures registered in this period mark a passenger traffic increase of 50.8%, with a growth of 30.2% as regards flight movements and 16.9% as regards air freight.
The difference with pre-pandemic figures is still remarkable, but it has been improving, especially in the second half of the year. How heavily the new variant Omicron will impact on air traffic is still to be known. The implementation of the "Super Greenpass", in force as from yesterday, will not affect directly the aviation industry.
