An uphill start of the year for Bologna Airport: surges in new cases caused by Omicron variant and the new flight restrictions (both domestic and international) stopped the traffic growth which had been recorded during Summer and Autumn 2021.
January closed with 316,583 passengers, a decrease of 50.6% on January 2019 (last pre-Covid year), but a growth of 307.6% on January 2021, when a large spike of cases due to the "second wave" occurred.
In detail, in January 2022 110,214 passengers on domestic flights were recorded (- 24.2% on 2019, but +207.8% on 2021) and 206,369 passengers on international flights (-58.4% on 2019, +392.8% on 2021).
Flight movements were 3,529, decreasing by 34.3% on 2019 (+208.5% on 2021), while air freight amounted to 3,223 tons, a slowdown of 2.6% on 2019, but +8.1% on 2021.
According to the month's most-popular-destination ranking, 4 Italian airports rank in the "top-ten positions". Catania, Palermo and Tirana lead the ranking, followed by Madrid, Barcelona, Bari, Paris Charles de Gaulle, Brindisi, Bucharest and Istanbul.
February started with fewer travel restrictions for air travelers coming to Italy from EU Countries. Hopefully, the pandemic declining in spring and a better fine-tuning of travel requirements at an international level will facilitate traffic growth worldwide.

Aeroporto Guglielmo Marconi di Bologna, classified as a "strategic airport" in the centre-north area of the National Airports Plan prepared by the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport, recorded in 2021 - a year affected by the global pandemic – 4.1 million passengers, ranking as the eighth biggest Italian airport by number of passengers (Source: Assaeroporti).
