Bologna, 11 March 2024 - As part of the acoustic impact monitoring and management programme, ADB has prepared the calculation of the airport noise level (LVA) referring to the year 2023, in accordance with current legislation. In this regard and having compared the 2023 actual noise map with the noise limits provided by the airport noise zoning maps, minor exceeding of these limits were detected during 2023 in areas, falling mainly in the western sector of the airport surroundings and characterized by limited surface extension and low population density. The same measurements also verified the compliance of the noise emission levels with the acoustic limits in the areas with high population density located in the eastern sector of the airport surroundings (Navile, Pescarola, Corticella neighbourhoods).
The airport management company believes that the limited and circumscribed exceedances indicated above are attributable to the proactive and positive procedures and ordinances implemented in order to limit the noise impact on the densely populated areas surrounding the airport. These measures concerned, respectively, Ordinance ENAC N° 5/2023 of 14/06/2023 introducing further operational restrictions and the halving of the runway operational capacity in the "night" period which allowed since 19/06/2023 the drastic reduction of night-time overflights over the town of Bologna, and the ENAV operational procedure for modifying the initial climb for Runway 12 takeoff turns towards Bologna which, from 09/07/2023, by modifying the turning altitude from 800 feet to 520 feet, allowed an effective shift of takeoff trajectories to areas with lower population density. Overall, these actions have made it possible to reduce the population exposed to airport noise levels.
In relation to the detected exceeding, within the limited areas reported, of the acoustic limits as indicated above, AdB will immediately initiate appropriate consultations with the members of the Commission according to art. 5 Ministerial Decree Ministry of the Environment 31/10/1997, in order to develop the noise abatement plan as prescribed by European and National legislation, therefore allocating adequate resources consistent with the airport management company's sustainable development plans, also sharing effective utilisation of noise-related IRESA tax with the interested Municipalities.
Aeroporto Guglielmo Marconi di Bologna, classified as a "strategic airport" in the centre-north area of the National Airports Plan prepared by the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport, recorded in 2023 around 10 million passengers, ranking as the seventh biggest Italian airport by number of passengers (Source: Assaeroporti – Aeroporti2030). Located in the heart of the Emilian food valley and the automotive and packaging industrial districts, the airport has a catchment area of about 11 million inhabitants and around 47,000 companies, with a strong propensity to exports and internationalisation and with commercial expansion policies to Eastern Europe and Asia.
As for airport infrastructure, the airport has among its strategic objectives in the next few years an important development plan that mainly concerns the expansion of the terminal, particularly in the parts of security checks and gate area. The company's aim is to make Bologna Airport one of the most modern and functional in Italy, an important gateway to the city and region.
