The listed venture capital firm DEWB AG (Deutsche Effecten- und Wechsel- Beteiligungsgesellschaft) has taken a ten percent shareholding in KSW Microtec AG. The financing for the Dresden-based firm is the sixth venture capital investment by DEWB in the current fiscal year. KSW Microtec AG develops miniaturised smart labels and is one of the world’s leading manufacturers in this field. Smart labels are extremely thin, intelligent data carriers in label form which are used in particular in the food industry, logistics and medical technology. By using these labels data can be transferred to a scanning device on a decentralised basis, without any visual contact and with high recording capacity. KSW Microtec’s latest development is an active smart label which, in addition, enables the monitoring of temperature data during transportation and storage. Thanks to the in-house development of the memory chips KSW Microtec is one of the technology leaders in the manufacture of high quality smart labels. In addition, the company has its own microelectronic production facilities, with the specialist production technology protected by patents for a number of years. Although passive smart labels are currently still the biggest contributor to the sales of KSW Microtec, in the foreseeable future active smart labels are intended to become the Dresden-based company’s core product. KSW Microtec was founded in 1994 and today employs a total of 36 personnel. The funds raised are to be used by the company to develop into a system solutions provider. To this end the company is concentrating its efforts on combining electronic item security, goods management data and quality-related information on a smart label.
