Innovation Prize for 2007 from the Kaufmännische Krankenkasse (KKH)
awarded to Apoplex/Geratherm
Pirmasens/Geschwenda, October 24, 2007
The KKH’s Prize for Medical Innovation for the year 2007 has been awarded
to the team at apoplex, in Pirmasens – a subsidiary company of Geratherm
Medical.
Today, at the Deutsche Präventionskongress in Dresden, the KKH presented
prizes to outstanding and forward-looking medical innovations in the fields
of early recognition and prevention. The main prize, which had been endowed
with 12,000 Euro, was awarded to apoplex medical technologies GmbH,
Pirmasens, for their development of an early warning system for apoplectic
strokes, known as the 'Stroke Risk Analyzer (SRA) Procedure'.
This screening technique identifies previously unrecognised cases in which
atrial fibrillation is occurring on a sporadic basis only, this being one
of the most dangerous risk factors in terms of apoplectic strokes. The new
element in this procedure is the fact that – in contrast to other
examination methods – it is even capable of identifying patients who are at
risk if their atrium is not fibrillating at the time of the examination.
This illness – which frequently goes unrecognised – can be treated
effectively. In Germany alone, the estimated number of unreported cases
amounts to 300,000 patients.
'What convinced us about this early warning system for apoplectic strokes
was its sophisticated technology, ease of handling and swift data
evaluation,' says Ingo Kailuweit, Chairman of the Board of the KKH. In
Germany, a country in which 22 people suffer an apoplectic stroke every
hour around 100 doctors in private practice are already working with this
prize-winning system.
Deciding where the prizes should be awarded this year were eleven jurors,
all recognised experts from the healthcare field.
With 1.9 million policy-holders and a budget amounting to 4 billion Euro,
the KKH is one of the major statutory health insurance companies in
Germany.
Further information about apoplex medical technologies
apoplex medical technologies GmbH was founded in 2004, in the town of
Pirmasens in the West Palatinate region, and since then its specialisation
within the medical technology sector has been the development of new and
innovative technological products to be used around the world for the
prevention of apoplectic strokes. This subsidiary company of Geratherm
Medical AG places the emphasis firmly on easy-to-use and effective methods
for so-called 'patient screening' by means of technological medical
applications for the avoidance of apoplectic strokes and vascular dementia.
The SRA ('Stroke Risk Analyzer') procedure is the first workable screening
procedure for paroxysmal atrial fibrillation. Variants of the procedure are
available for use in doctor’s surgeries, chemist’s shops and in the special
stations for apoplectic strokes designated as 'Stroke Units'. apoplex
medical technologies enjoys the support of a wide-ranging academic and
clinical network of professionals, complementing the company’s own core
competences in the fields of mathematics, physics and medicine. To learn
