Hamburger Hafen und Logistik AG: Extremely successful 2008 first half
Hamburger Hafen und Logistik AG / Half Year Results

With a 38.7 percent leap in earnings before interest and taxes (EBIT) to
192.5 million euros and a 17.6 percent increase in revenues to 660 million
euros, Hamburger Hafen und Logistik AG (HHLA) made excellent progress in
the first six months of this year.
'Hamburger Hafen und Logistik AG can look back on an extremely successful
first half in 2008. HHLA has once again disproportionately boosted its
revenues and earnings. We are proud that we have yet again succeeded in
increasing profitability while being heavily utilized,' stated Klaus-Dieter
Peters, HHLA CEO, on the publication of HHLA’s Interim Report for January
to June 2008 on 14 August.
'Despite the clouding over of the world economic environment, we are
standing by our goals for revenues and earnings. For the 2008 financial
year that means double-digit growth in revenues to around 1.3 billion
euros. For earnings before interest and taxes (EBIT) at Group level we are
reckoning with a figure between 320 and 350 million euros,' continued
Peters.
Overview of the main Group figures (January–June 2008)
Revenues of the stock exchange-listed Port Logistics sub-group, HHLA’s core
business, rose over the first six months of 2008 by 18.0 percent to 646.5
million euros. The sub-group’s EBIT rose disproportionately by 38.7 percent
to 186.4 million euros. The Port Logistics sub-group thus accounted for
97.7 percent of Group earnings and 96.8 percent of Group EBIT.
Against an environment of weaker momentum in world economic development,
with its intermeshing of cargo handling and transport operations along the
logistics chain between the overseas port and the European hinterland
HHLA’s business model again proved itself. Throughput handled by the
Container Segment, for instance, rose by 7.3 percent to 3.7 million
standard containers (TEU).
Volume rose even more strongly in the Intermodal Segment, which with a 16.4
percent advance handled a total of 0.9 million standard containers (TEU) in
the first six months of 2008. Here the dynamic development of services with
Central and Eastern Europe made a special contribution.
During the first half of 2008 HHLA energetically forged ahead with its
current expansion programme. Among other developments, the new on-dock
container rail terminal at HHLA Container Terminal Tollerort was taken into
service. Additional railcars were acquired for the Metrans rail company,
and Polzug’s rail terminal in Wroclaw (Breslau) was modernized.
During the period 2008 to 2012 HHLA will be investing altogether 1.5
billion euros in expanding its handling capacities, its hinterland network
and its logistics activities.
