HMS Bergbau AG acquires harbour operations in Indonesia
+++ Strategic development of HMS Group
+++ Provides reliable income
+++ Medium term plans for harbour expansion including capacity increase
Berlin, May 27, 2010: HMS Bergbau AG, an international coal supplier with
operating know-how of coal mining, transport and trade, has acquired
harbour operations in Indonesia. The strategic acquisition provides
reliable income. Bulk Port Kintap in South Kalimantan is one of the most
modern harbours in the region where coal is handled, mixed and stored. Its
maximum capacity totals several million tonnes per year.
HMS Bergbau AG has managed to take the next step towards its strategic
orientation after concluding an exclusive contract with an Indonesian coal
producer designed to secure high-quality coal resources in the long-term at
the beginning of 2010 and the continued positive development of trading
activities. Medium term plans are to turn the coal trading company into a
group that comprises all vertical levels of the coal business process
chain.
The Indonesian harbour lies in a strategically important area, where
numerous coal mining companies are situated. Apart from operating a
traditional harbour, HMS Bergbau AG plans to purchase coal from producers,
which do not have the logistics to market their products. The Group also
plans to expand the harbour in the medium term, to account for the
constantly growing coal markets in Asia.
'The acquisition of the harbour in Kintap, Indonesia, is the most important
move towards developing and strengthening the export position of HMS Group
in Asia. Next to China, Taiwan and Korea, India is one of the most
interesting markets with its growing coal import business. By gaining full
control over the harbour, we have laid the foundation for participating in
the economic opportunities Asia has to offer,' explains Heinz Schernikau,
CEO of HMS Bergbau AG.
