Funkwerk AG: Funkwerk wins first major contract in Australia

Funkwerk AG / Key word(s): Agreement

Funkwerk wins first major contract in Australia

  • Rail Corporation New South Wales orders 685 train radio systems (cab
radios) from Thuringian communication technology specialist
  • Leading solution in global rail communication sector now on fifth
    continent
  • Option for further system upgrades

Kölleda/Sydney, September 16, 2010. The world's most successful mobile
device for rail traffic control has arrived on the fifth continent. Already
successful in 30 countries, Funkwerk's 'cab radios' have now attracted the
attention of Australia's Rail Corporation New South Wales (RailCorp NSW) in
Sydney. By the end of 2012, 685 of these GSM-R train radio systems will be
delivered with Funkwerk's digital technology. Worth several millions of
euros, it is the first major contract from Australia for the specialist in
communication technology from Kölleda in Thuringia.

Over the next 10 years, the Australian government plans to invest more than
50 billion Australian dollars (around 35 billion euros) to modernise its
rail infrastructure. As part of this 'Metropolitan Transport Plan',
RailCorp NSW - the largest regional rail transport operator 'down under'
with over 300 million passengers a year - has committed to modernising its
vehicle fleet and communication systems.

Australian government invests billions in developing rail infrastructure

Under the control of infrastructure provider United Group Infrastructure
Ltd. based in Sydney, Funkwerk will be responsible for equipping the trains
with GSM-R terminals. 'This is our first major break as a supplier in this
country. The new reference will open up the chance for us to win further
contracts advertised as part of the Metropolitan Transport Plan,' says Uwe
Lehmann, Managing Director of Communication Systems.

Aimed at modernising the regional rail transport in Australia's most
populated state with its capital, Sydney - the host of the Olympic Games in
2000 - the project has already commenced and is scheduled to be completed
by 2012. The contract awarded to Funkwerk also involves the option of
delivering a further 230 train radio systems.

Further options for global market leader Funkwerk 'down under'

Today, Funkwerk leads the market for cab radios by a wide margin, having
recently supplied the 20,000th mobile radio terminal for communication
between trains and operating centre. Rail operators in 30 countries
currently use cab radios from Funkwerk. As a result, the digital
communication systems from Funkwerk now control the data and voice radio
communication of all major public and private carriers world-wide.

As a basic requirement for secure, schedule-effective and reliable railway
operations, train radio systems factor increasingly in technical rail
services. As a result, the worldwide in demand for intelligent rail
communication technology as provided by Funkwerk is predicted to continue
to rise.
