PSI Awarded Contract for the Upgrade of the Rhein-Ruhr Verteilnetz GmbH
Network Control Technology

PSI has been awarded the contract from the Rhein-Ruhr Verteilnetz GmbH, a
company of the RWE Deutschland Group, for the modernisation of the three
existing network control systems for the management of the 110 kV and
medium-voltage grids with an extensive upgrade. In the course of the
modernisation, the network control systems will be combined into a single
system on the basis of the new PSIcontrol. The corresponding contract, with
a volume in the middle single-digit million range, was awarded in June.

The three existing Rhein-Ruhr Verteilnetz GmbH network control systems were
implemented between 1998 and 2002 and thereafter extensively extended in a
number of steps. There are a total of eight control center sites. In a
multi-year analysis, which was conducted by a neutral consulting company
and supported by PSI, Rhein-Ruhr Verteilnetz decided to complete a
comprehensive upgrade of the network control technology and then contracted
PSI with the realisation.

Compared to the previously used system, the new network control technology
will consist of a sweeping modernisation of the system technology and the
application software. In particular, functions for the management of the
feeding in of renewable energies will be integrated. The system also takes
into consideration the security requirements of the BDEW Security
whitepaper.

With the newly developed system the three current systems will be combined
into a single overall system with a total of three sites. The network
management tasks for the entire grid will, however, be executable from all
of the sites. In addition, by means of a client technology, it will be
possible to assume the network management of other companies as a service.

With the retrofitted system, Rhein-Ruhr Verteilnetz obtains tools with
which it will be able to handle future tasks - ones that cannot even be
envisioned today - in connection with the development of energy supply
under new political conditions. The data pools from the current partial
systems will, for the most part, be taken over.

The system will contain a multitude of functions to support the operators.
Amongst these are comfortable fault analyses, switching job management,
integrated online network calculations, a centralised regulation of
transformers, data compilation for the FNN fault statistics and much more.
A network simulator will support the training of control centre personnel
so that even unforeseen fault situations can be routinely controlled.
Commencement of operations is planned for the years 2013 and 2014.

With the new order from the Rhein-Ruhr Verteilnetz, PSI can once again
solidify its strong market position in network control technology for large
network operators.
