ELMOS Semiconductor AG: First RGB LED driver according to LIN standard with BSM auto addressing worldwide

(DGAP-Media / 17.10.2012 / 10:47)

E521.30: Ideal for automotive interior lighting

With the IC E521.30, ELMOS introduces an RGB LED system basic chip. The
component features a fully integrated BSM (bus shunt method) auto
addressing LIN transceiver. BSM represents a method for addressing
participants in an LIN bus system that is robust and has been proven
millions of times. The BSM auto addressing method has been established
among the German OEMs e.g. in the field of HVAC flap motors and has been
used for almost ten years across the platforms, both robust and reliable.
All development and diagnostic tools required for this method are in field
use already. ELMOS has been a well-established provider of a fully
integrated solution based on this method for several years.

A potential application of the E521.30 is the individual ambient lighting
of the car's interior with RGB LEDs. Thus the driver gets to choose between
a rather stimulating or relaxing color variation, depending on situation
and mood.

The method applied in the IC has very good fault tolerance, e.g. for 'loss
of ground', and gives the option of a 'mixed' assembly with LIN bus
participants. Therefore even bus participants ignorant of BSM can be
integrated into a system. Each bus participant can be reached via protocol
anytime, even while addressing other participants. Broadcasts can be
transmitted to all participants at any time. By simple software
implementation in the slave, the master can validate address allocation.
With this unique function, even address allocation can be subjected to
diagnosis.

Systems in field use today include more than 16 participants already. The
E521.30 has accommodated essential aspects such as optimized slave timing
and low transceiver capacity in order to allow for an even larger number of
bus participants.

The E521.30 has an integrated voltage regulator with an output power of 5V/
100mA. For driving the LEDs, three LED drivers with a switching capacity of
50mA each are integrated. As another option, a four-LED-driver version is
available on request. Furthermore, the E521.30 features elaborate
protective functions (short-circuit, temperature) and FLASH mode. The
component is obtainable in the version with three LED drivers in a
VDFN14L4030 package and the four-LED-driver version in a QFN20L4 package.

The E521.30 LIN SBC has been developed according to standards LIN 2.1 and
SAE-J2602 and in line with the high automotive requirements.
