Elmos Semiconductor AG: Smart Metering: The use of intelligent energy meters
(DGAP-Media / 09.10.2013 / 11:00)
Higher efficiency with Elmos semiconductors
Smart metering will finds its way into households increasingly over the
next years. With the help of intelligent energy meters, e.g. the
consumption data of power, water, gas and heat in private households can be
recorded, controlled and processed in a sophisticated way. This implies for
the end consumer: Recording current power consumption gives him or her the
opportunity to access power depending on the time of day. He or she can
thus use the respective provider's power tariffs in a flexible way and
reduce energy costs. Elmos semiconductors can make energy demand even more
efficient here: The smart meters' energy consumption is reduced by the
Elmos PFM switching regulator family E522.7x for voltage supply.
Another advantage of smart metering is that remotely readable meters allow
for meter readings to be read out at any time without requiring an
appointment for a meter reading. Readings or meter data are read out
electronically by the provider and can then be used for optimum energy
management. Some intelligent meters can only be used for the annual billing
while others make energy consumption visible (on the PC or by an app) and
even allow the control of the energy flow.
Efficient systems are necessary for the end consumer's installation costs
and operating costs to pay off soon. The Elmos PFM DC/DC converters make
for an ideal and cost-efficient opportunity to realize voltage supply for
intelligent meters. The Elmos E522.7x family provides high efficiency
throughout the entire load range. This is guaranteed by the PFM method
(Pulse Frequency Modulation) of the DC/DC converters. Thus Elmos components
are able to reach an efficiency rate above 90 % over a broad load range,
even at quiescent currents of 8µA (typ.). Compared to conventionally used
standard PWM regulators, this is a considerable efficiency gain. The input
voltage range can be between 3.8V and 40V. For output voltages, two fixed
voltage regulators - 3.3V and 5V - and one version with adjustable output
voltage are available. A duty cycle of 100% makes it possible to achieve a
minimum voltage difference between input and output voltage in the
undervoltage range.
Elmos semiconductors make it possible, without any major effort, to have
applications become roughly 10 to 20mW more efficient in the lower load
range. Multiplied by the number of households or by the number of smart
meters, the benefit is huge.
An 'application support center' is available on the Internet for
dimensioning and simulation purposes. You will find the application support
center on our website (www.elmos.com). The suggested standard circuit can
be aligned online to customer specific requirements. By the push of a
button, you will receive the circuit diagram, simulation results, and the
bill of materials for your circuit.
