Press release

Medios AG and partner pharmacies support HIV project in Africa

A joint donation amounting to EUR 20,000 has been made to German Doctors e.V.

to finance an HIV project in Zimbabwe

– Manfred Schneider, CEO of Medios AG: “With our donation to German Doctors, we want to

make a targeted contribution to improving treatment conditions for HIV patients

in Zimbabwe.”

Berlin, 31 August 2017 – Medios AG, a competence partner and solution provider in the specialty pharma segment, has donated EUR 20,000 with partner pharmacies to support an HIV project in Africa. Half of the donation comes from Medios AG, the other half is from Berlin Apotheke Schneider & Oleski OHG, Berlin Apotheke Friedrichshain, Melanie Dolfen e.Kfr., Witzleben Apotheke 26, Claudia Neuhaus e.Kfr., Quartier Apotheke Nollendorfplatz, Kai-Uwe Wilken-Prozesky e.K. and Apotheke am Mehringplatz, Stefan Rezepa e.K..

The donation is provided to the international non-governmental organization German Doctors e.V. in order to buy new cartridges for HIV diagnosis. The containers are used in an existing PCR-based analyzer (polymerase chain reaction) in the Karanda Mission Hospital in Zimbabwe where they will make a decisive contribution to improving HIV treatment.

To date, the analyzer has only been used to diagnose tuberculosis. With the new cartridges, it can also measure viral loads in HIV patients – a process that optimizes the control of HIV treatments: When the device proves a virus in the blood, other medications can be applied. Up to now, it has only been possible to assume the failure of prescribed medications on the basis of decreasing helper cells (CD4-lymphocytes). As a result, dysfunctional therapies were continued over long periods which led to numerous resistances.

Zimbabwe is one of the regions in Africa most severely affected by HIV. At present, about 1.4 million people live with the infection in Zimbabwe. This corresponds to more than 14 percent of the adult population. In Germany, the infection rate is only 0.1 percent.

Manfred Schneider, CEO of Medios AG: “As a specialty pharmaceutical company, which specializes in HIV, among other things, we not only strive to offer partners and customers integrated solutions along the value chain, but we also ensure optimum healthcare for patients on site. With our donation to German Doctors, we want to make a targeted contribution to improving treatment conditions for HIV patients in Zimbabwe.”
