Natural gas consumption reached an historic record high in France

GDF SUEZ is fully mobilised faced with an exceptional situation to secure supply for its European customers

French natural gas consumption has reached record levels, with Europe and France in particular seeing the coldest spell of weather in 10 years. The all-time high for French consumption was largely overran two consecutive days on 6 and 7 January 2009 (+40% compared with the same period in 2008). On January 7th, France has seen a 145,000 MW consumption peak, a level never reached before.

In addition, the near breaking off of Russian gas deliveries passing through Ukraine is currently depriving the Group of around 15% of its total supplies in Europe.

Faced with these climatic conditions and this unprecedented supply situation, GDF SUEZ is mobilising all of its human and technical resources as well as its expertise.

GDF SUEZ has immediately mobilised all of its staff and all the available means to secure supply to its customers (storage facilities, long-term import contracts of natural gas and liquefied natural gas, chartering of an additional LNG carrier, etc.). All of the Group technical facilities (more than 200,000 km of networks, compression stations, LNG facilities, storages…) are exploited to their maximum in order to ensure the continuity of natural gas supply for its customers.

The Group has major assets to cope with this situation: French and international teams with recognised know-how, Europe's most diversified sourcing portfolio, including access to liquefied natural gas, as well as Europe's second largest storage capacity.

One of the leading energy providers in the world, GDF SUEZ is active across the entire energy value chain, in electricity and natural gas, upstream to downstream. It develops its businesses (energy, energy services and environment) around a responsible-growth model to take up the great challenges: responding to energy needs, ensuring the security of supply, fighting against climate change and maximizing the use of resources. GDF SUEZ relies on diversified supply sources as well as flexible and high-performance power generation in order to provide innovative energy solutions to individuals, cities and businesses. The Group employs 196,500 people worldwide and achieved revenues of €74,3 billion in 2007. GDF SUEZ is listed on the Brussels, Luxembourg and Paris stock exchanges and is represented in the main international indices: CAC 40, BEL 20, DJ Stoxx 50, DJ Euro Stoxx 50, Euronext 100, FTSE Eurotop 100, MSCI Europe and ASPI Eurozone.
