Paris, 3rd February 2009 – With box-office receipts of 24.6 million dollars (source: Variety), the film produced by EuropaCorp and distributed by 20th Century Fox has been the subject of an exceptional opening, grabbing top spot in the US box-office rankings this weekend. Taken also recorded the second-best release figures ever seen in the US for a Super Bowl weekend, as well as the best ever start for a French film for its opening weekend in the United States.
Released 11 months ago in France, where it recorded over a million cinema admissions, Taken has since been distributed across 43 other territories in 2008, totalling box office receipts of 69 million dollars, prior to its release in the United States (source: boxofficemojo.com).
Taken, directed by Pierre Morel and starring Liam Neeson and Famke Janssen, is an action-packed thriller that relates the adventures of a retired American secret agent who is prepared to do anything it takes to get back his daughter, who has been kidnapped by a gang in Paris.
Just weeks after the worldwide success of Transporter 3, EuropaCorp has again shown its unique knowhow in Europe when it comes to dreaming up and producing films that can compete with the major American film studios. To date, Taken and Transporter 3 are the two French films released in 2008 that have totalled the largest number of cinema admissions worldwide.
