Paris – 16 April 2012
A few weeks before the United Nations' Rio+20 Conference on Sustainable Development scheduled for Rio de Janeiro on 20-22 June, the prominent Brazilian city has signed a contract with Plastic Omnium for wheeled household waste containers.
For Plastic Omnium, this is the first large contract for its new 100% Green Made wheeled containers, which were premiered at the Salon Pollutec trade show in Lyon just over a year ago. The bins are made entirely with plant-based polyethylene derived from non alimentary sugarcane.
The contract, which is for an initial order of 50,000 240-liter bins, reflects Rio de Janeiro's respect for Plastic Omnium's expertise and ability to use local raw materials that are entirely environmentally friendly. As part of an exclusive agreement with a Brazilian supplier, the material was formulated and adapted to the manufacturing process by Plastic Omnium at its ∑-Sigmatech Research and Development Center in La Plaine de l'Ain, near Lyon (France).
Produced at Plastic Omnium's Langres plant in eastern France, the Green Made bins represent a viable alternative to containers made with fossil fuel-based polyethylene as they reduce greenhouse gas emissions by around 85%.
The contract with the City of Rio de Janeiro is an important world first for Plastic Omnium Environment that confirms its leadership in the area of innovation as well as its commitment to pursuing environmentally responsible policies.
