Elkem reports one fatality following explosion at Saint-Fons pilot workshop in France
Oslo, Norway - 24 December 2025 - Elkem ASA reports that on the afternoon of 22
December 2025, an explosion occurred at a pilot workshop at the Elkem Silicones
site in Saint-Fons, located in Lyon, France. One employee lost his life as a
result of the accident, while three others were injured.
"On behalf of Elkem's management and all our colleagues, I wish to express our
deepest sympathy to the family and loved ones of our colleague whose life was
lost, to those who were injured, and to everyone affected by this tragic
incident. We are committed to supporting our employees and their families in
every way possible during this very difficult time," said Elkem CEO Helge Aasen.
Elkem's management is working closely with local authorities to coordinate the
handling of the accident. Psychological support services are being provided to
all employees affected. Elkem has temporarily shut down operations at both the
North and South sites in Saint-Fons, 1.5 days ahead of the scheduled year-end
closure.
An internal investigation by Elkem and external investigations by the local
authorities in France have been initiated.
"We will thoroughly investigate what caused this tragedy and identify actions
that can be taken to prevent it from ever happening again. Workplace and
environmental safety are of paramount importance to Elkem," said Aasen.
