MURATA launches miniaturised DMT series supercapacitor targeting SSDs, smart meters and communications

CAP-XX's licensee for small form supercapacitor devices, Murata Manufacturing Co., Ltd. (Murata), this week announced the launch of its DMT series, one of the most reliable electrical double-layer capacitors (EDLC) available on the market today. The device offers superior long-term performance in a compact14 x 21mm design that enables high voltage handling of (4.2V) . The  DMT series is ideally suited for applications in solid state drive (SSD) and communication system backup, power assistance for smart meters, and energy storage for energy-harvesting devices.  Murata identifies the expansion of these markets as driving the demand for smaller, thinner, and low-resistance capacitors.

The full Murata release, together with the technical performance specification for the DMT  can be seen at:  http://www.murataamericas.com/edlc

Target customer applications for the DMT Series devices are:

•          Power assistance for smart meters

•          Backup power supply for communication systems

•          Backup power supply for other systems

•          Energy storage device for energy-harvesting systems

Murata stated that the basis behind this technology is the result of its collaboration with CAP-XX, adding that in order to meet demand for devices with greater efficiency and functionality, Murata strategically licensed supercapacitor technology from CAP-XX in 2008. Murata's focus on EDLC research and development, coupled with CAP-XX's market expertise, drives the advancement of enhanced EDLC design.

CAP-XX receives royalty income on volume of devices sold under its licence agreement with Murata.
