GSW Immobilien AG, founded in 1924, is one of the traditional companies in Berlin's housing industry. Started as the municipal "Wohnungsfürsorgegesellschaft Berlin mbH", eight municipal housing construction and settlement companies merged in 1937 to form the "Gemeinnützige Siedlungs- und Wohnungsbaugesellschaft Berlin mbH".
In 2004, the state of Berlin sold the housing company to a consortium of various investment companies, which renamed the company GSW Immobilien GmbH. In March 2010, the company changed its legal form to GSW Immobilien AG and was listed on the stock exchange in April 2011. From September 2011 to November 2013, GSW Immobilien AG was listed on the MDax.
In October 2013, the shareholders of GSW Immobilien AG received an offer from Deutsche Wohnen SE, also listed on the MDAX, to exchange shares as part of a voluntary public takeover offer. This was accepted by a majority and achieved a final acceptance rate of 91.05%.
