“ Announcement ”
with a project to set up India’s first vertical shaft DRI plant using 100% hydrogen, pioneering the path toward green steel production."
Simplex Castings Limited has been selected to lead a consortium in developing a pioneering green hydrogen-powered Direct Reduced Iron (DRI) pilot plant with a production capacity of 40 tons per day (TPD). It is one of the three pilot projects sanctioned under the National Green Hydrogen Mission by MECON, is aligned with Ministry of Steel (MoS) and the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE). In this ambitious endeavor, Simplex Castings will collaborate with key partners, including BSBK Pvt Ltd, Ten Eighty Investment, and IIT Bhilai, each contributing expertise to support the project’s success. Together, the consortium is dedicated to advancing green hydrogen technology as a cleaner alternative in the steel production process.
The total project capital expenditure is estimated at INR 230 crore , with the government providing substantial support by covering around INR 161 crore, or 70% of the funding. This significant government contribution emphasizes the strategic importance of developing green steel technology to reduce carbon emissions. The financial support demonstrates the government’s commitment to fostering sustainable industrial practices, which aligns with India’s larger goals of minimizing environmental impact and promoting clean energy technologies. Simplex Castings participation in this project highlights its role in driving change in the steel industry through state-backed innovation.
In this facility, Simplex Castings and its consortium partners will employ Direct Reduced Iron (DRI) vertical shaft technology, where green hydrogen will replace traditional carbon-intensive fuels such as coal and natural gas in the iron reduction process. This approach produces only water as a byproduct, completely eliminating CO₂ emissions associated with conventional steelmaking processes. By adopting green hydrogen as the primary reducing agent, Simplex and its partners are setting a precedent in the industry for sustainable production practices. This facility will serve as a demonstration of how advanced, eco-friendly technology can lead to cleaner, greener steel production, aligning with India’s environmental objectives.
The project will not only yield environmental benefits but will also contribute to economic growth and regional development. By establishing a model for scalable green steel production, the pilot plant will create employment opportunities and strengthen local supply chains. With its operations and development focus, Simplex Castings is poised to drive progress in Chhattisgarh. This green hydrogen initiative is expected to encourage further industrial innovation and support the growth of a green economy, reinforcing Simplex’s role as a leader in sustainable industrial solutions.
