Sunbird Energy Announces Key Appointments

South African gas project developer Sunbird Energy Ltd (ASX: SNY ) is pleased to announce two highly experienced appointments. The additions to the Sunbird Energy team are in line with the Company’s significant growth plans as it progresses its offshore Ibhubesi gas and condensate field towards commercialisation and continues to explore its sizeable onshore CBM assets in southern Africa.

Technical Director

Sunbird Energy is pleased to announce that Nathan Rayner has been appointed as the Company’s Technical Director. Mr Rayner is a Petroleum Engineer with over 15 years of experience, specialising in managing technical teams, resource evaluations and developing gas projects globally.

Mr Rayner held the position of Evaluation Manager for Addax Petroleum Ltd, based in Geneva, managing its West African new discovery field development planning, appraisal programs and resource portfolio.

From 2008 to 2010, Mr Rayner was the General Manager of Petroleum Engineering for ASX-listed Arrow Energy Ltd, where he was responsible for field development planning, production optimisation and reserves growth.

Prior to joining Sunbird Energy, Mr Rayner held the position of Chief Operating Officer with Dart Energy Ltd, based in Singapore. As COO for Dart Energy, he had managerial, operational and technical responsibility for all international exploration, drilling and production activities in Europe, China, India and Indonesia.

As Technical Director, Mr Rayner will be responsible for delivering the Full Field Development Plan for Sunbird Energy’s Ibhubesi Gas Project, a key milestone in progressing the project to Final Investment Decision, and overseeing the Company's CBM operations in southern Africa as they progress from exploration to production.

Sunbird Energy Managing Director, Mr Will Barker, said the Company was pleased to be able to appoint someone with Mr Rayner’s skills and experience to the newly created position of Technical Director.

“Nathan brings to this position a strong international background in project development and management and in particular African field development experience. He is a welcome addition to the growing Sunbird team as we progress the Ibhubesi gas project and our onshore CBM projects.”

Appointment of General Counsel and Company Secretary

Sunbird Energy is also pleased to announce the appointment of Mark Balfour as General Counsel and Company Secretary of the Company.

Mr Balfour is a Commercial and Resources Lawyer with nearly 30 years’ experience in private legal practice, in-house counsel roles and executive directorships - in both listed and unlisted resources companies - with assets variously in Australia, South Africa, North America, Indonesia, China and Papua New Guinea.

As Company Secretary for various listed and unlisted public companies and their subsidiaries in the past 10 years, Mr Balfour has had responsibility for corporate governance in various jurisdictions including Australia, North America, Channel Islands, Papua New Guinea and the Republic of South Africa.

Mr Barker said the Company welcomed the addition of Mr Balfour’s extensive legal and commercial experience, including his working knowledge of resource developments as Sunbird continues to advance its projects to commercialisation.

Resignation of Company Secretary

Sunbird Energy Limited has accepted the resignation of Ms. Sophie Raven as a Company Secretary for the Company with effect from 9[th] May 2013. Ms. Raven undertook the Company Secretary duties for the Company from May 2012 through a period of some significant growth and development of the Company. The Board has expressed its sincere wishes for Ms. Raven to continue to enjoy success in the future.

Project has multiple development opportunities including gas-fired power projects to supply the high value South African energy market. Sunbird’s joint venture partner in the project is PetroSA (24%), the national oil company of South Africa.

Sunbird also has a portfolio of five Coal Bed Methane (CBM) projects covering an extensive area (9,904km[2] ) of prospective coal basins across in South Africa and Botswana. Sunbird is conducting a phased exploration program that will define the resource base and demonstrate the commercial potential of its portfolio of CBM assets, which contain a Best Estimate Gas-in-Place of 5.3 Tcf (trillion cubic feet).
