EXPERIENCED MINER JOINS GOLDEN WEST AS IT HEADS TOWARDS IRON ORE START-UP
One of the architects of the McArthur River open cut zinc mine development, former MIM Holdings and Xstrata executive, Mr Peter Thompson, has joined emerging Western Australian iron ore producer, Golden West Resources Limited (ASX: GWR) as an Executive Director.
Mr Thompson, who is currently a non-executive Director of mining and civil contractor, JJ McDonald and Sons Group, takes up the position as Golden West's General Manager – Operations, immediately.
Managing Director, Mr Gary Hutchinson, said today Mr Thompson was joining Golden West at a critical stage in the Company's development.
" Mr Thompson played a leading role in bringing the McArthur River open cut zinc mine in the Northern Territory into production, completed the feasibility study for the \$500 million Albion Zinc refinery in Oueensland, and was General Manager of the Ravenswood gold mine in Queensland," Mr Hutchinson said.
"His skills and 'hands on' experience in major mine developments will be vital as Golden West progresses through the current scoping study and potential development stages of our Wiluna West hematite iron ore project in WA's central west," he said.
The Company last month successfully defined Wiluna West's maiden Inferred Mineral Resource of 50.1 million tonnes (Mt) of direct shipping ore, averaging 61.1% iron (Fe) and is expected to upgrade this resource shortly because of the high number of assays awaiting analysis and ongoing intensive drilling.
Mr Thompson's 30 years experience in the mining industry in Australia, the UK and South America includes senior corporate, project commercialisation and operational management roles with Mount Edon Gold Mines, MIM Holdings and Xstrata.
In the past five years, he has focused particularly on participating in or leading studies into the development and expansion of mining and refinery operations and associated infrastructure covering roads, rail, port and power utilities.
