TRANSFIELD SERVICES WINS NEW WORK IN WESTERN AUSTRALIAN RESOURCES SECTOR

Transfield Services today announced a three-year contract worth approximately $120 million to provide asset management services to BHP Billiton Nickel West in Western Australia. The contract has two one-year extension options.

Transfield Services Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Mr Peter Watson, said today: “This contract increases our presence in the growing West Australian resources market. It builds on our current shutdown work at Kalgoorlie Nickel Smelter through our wholly-owned subsidiary Broadspectrum.”

“Transfield Services will provide operations and maintenance services, subcontractor and project management, and planned shutdown services to the world’s second largest nickel smelter at Kalgoorlie and the Mt Keith and Leinster Nickel Operations,” he said.

“More than 200 of Transfield Services’ skilled employees will work at the three sites, increasing to approximately 350 during shutdowns.”

Nickel is used in the production of stainless steel and in the specialty alloy, foundry, chemicals, and refractory material industries. Kalgoorlie Nickel Smelter has the capacity to produce 110,000 tonnes of nickel per annum.

Transfield Services Chief Executive Officer Australia, Mr Bruce James, said: “This contract builds on Transfield Services’ long term relationship with the BHP Billiton group of companies.”

“We have provided operations and maintenance services, as well as capital works, project management and shutdown services to BHP Billiton for more than a decade, including BHP Billiton’s Yabulu Nickel Refinery in Townsville, Queensland and as part of the BHP Billiton Mitsubishi Alliance based in Mackay, Queensland since 2005.”

“This commitment to safety played a key part in us winning this contract. Our Bibra Lake Induction Centre, near Fremantle in Western Australia provides practical hands-on safety training for Western Australia’s mining and process industry,” Mr James said.

“Transfield Services’ unique safety program, Our Way , ensures all our employees act with the same commitment to safety, whether they are on site for one hour or one year. Transfield Services has more than halved its lost time injury frequency rate since 1999.”

“Our diverse capabilities in the resources and industrial sector, stretching from electrical, instrumental, welding, scaffolding, plumbing and mechanical services to capital works and planned shutdowns, means we can meet Nickel West’s operational and maintenance needs.”
