PATENT APPLICATION FOR AMMG’S ALUMINA PROCESSING TECHNOLOGY

HIGHLIGHTS

  • The Company has filed a new patent application with the Australian patent office, Intellectual Property (IP) Australia.

  • The patent application relates to AMMG’s unique acid-based processing technology, which produces alumina from its aluminous clay material with purity levels greater than 99.95% purity (HPA).

  • The unique processing technology developed by AMMG uses a low-energy input, its reagents are recyclable.

  • AMMG’s aluminous clay material is a low impurity feedstock and has relatively high alumina levels (screened grade up to 38% Al2O3).

Australia Minerals and Mining Group Limited (ASX:AKA) (“AMMG” or “the Company”) is pleased to announce that it has filed a new patent application with the Australian patent office, Intellectual Property (IP) Australia.

AMMG’s Managing Director, Mr Ric Dawson said “The Company’s aim in filing the patent application is to protect the intellectual property relating to the creation of its own unique processing technology, which is in part favoured by the mineralogy of AMMG’s aluminous clay material.”

“AMMG’s processing technology benefits from a low-energy input; the process uses low temperatures and pressures. It produces saleable by-products and the key reagents are recyclable”, he added.

“With the patent application, AMMG has the confidence to advance its commercialisation strategy, which involves determining the optimised location and potential construction of a HPA pilot plant facility.

“After the successful production of greater than 99.9% HPA (see announcement dated 18[th] February 2013) using our process, AMMG will now build on advancing the level of interest we have received to date from around the world”, he concluded.

Background

The Company’s 100% owned South West HPA Project (held by its wholly owned subsidiary Kaolin Resources Pty Ltd) is made up of one (1) granted exploration licence and nine (9) applications, targeting aluminous clay in the south west of Western Australia and in the Yilgarn mineral belt: Meckering, Kerrigan, Kellerberrin, Bobalong and Gibson.

The Yilgarn Craton, which hosts the Company’s aluminous clay projects, is one of the oldest weathered cratons on earth. The weathered granites have left the residual aluminous clay so that the deposits are ‘primary’ or ‘in situ’ in nature, as opposed to those that are secondary in nature where the aluminous clay has been transported by water and then deposited in typically smaller and narrower deposits or lenses at the bottom of ancient lakes and rivers.

The ancient weathering process has also resulted in extremely low levels of impurities (such as iron and titanium); the aluminous clay is whitish in colour extending from surface to a reported depth of 42 metres.

High Purity Alumina (HPA)

HPA refers to alumina that has a purity level of more than 99.99% (4N). It is a premium highvalue product that is used in a number of applications such as high-performance electronics; tablets, mobile phones, computer screen backlighting; LED’s; and hybrid cars.

Due to its ascendant physical and chemical properties, HPA is used for its high heat resistance, excellent electrical isolation, abrasion resistance and high corrosion resistance.

HPA is used in coatings for a separator that improves the safety of lithium-ion secondary batteries as well as for battery electrodes.

It is used in the automotive sensor applications as an alumina substrate, which is used for its excellent electrical insulating properties and high heat conductivity.

Due to HPA’s high level of plasma corrosion resistance, it is used in semiconductor applications.

HPA ranges from about US$141,000 per tonne to US$396,000 per tonne depending on the purity and particle size. Based on industry reports, worldwide production of HPA is about 15,000tpa. This figure is expected to rise at approximately 7% CAGR, primarily driven by the rising LED market demand.

The Company has delineated two separate aluminous clay resources on its Meckering and Kerrigan aluminous clay projects, totalling 150 million tonnes (Mt) with screened grades of up to 38% alumina, and an exploration target* ranging from 1.3Bt to 1.7Bt. The resource is made up of 85Mt (inferred) at the Kerrigan project and 65Mt (16.77Mt indicated and 48.28Mt inferred) at the Meckering project.

The Company is currently planning the next phase of exploration in order to increase this resource.

*The term “Target” should not be misunderstood nor misconstrued as an estimate of Mineral Resources and Reserves as defined by the JORC Code (2004), and therefore the term has not been used in this context. It is uncertain if further exploration or feasibility study will result in the determination of a Mineral Resource or Mining Reserve.

About AMMG

AMMG was established for the purpose of securing exploration ground over areas that have typically been subject to historical exploration and where significant geological data was available and/or the land was considered sufficiently prospective. Areas with existing or potential access to infrastructure were also targeted.

To date, the Company has identified project areas located in Western Australia and Queensland, which the directors believe may have the potential for the realisation of economic resources of these commodities currently targeted, being - iron ore, aluminous clay, coal, mineral sands, salt, gypsum and gold.

The Company itself or under joint venture now has 21 granted tenements and 36 applications for tenements covering approximately 11,512km[2] over the project areas.
